Today we are talking all about screens! There is so much technology out there and this is a topic we could talk about for the rest of the year!
Technology Starts With Us!
We say all the time at CCF, your example is more important than you instruction. As the parents (or grandparents), we set the culture of technology in our home. The most important relationship we have with technology is ours! What we do with technology will determine what our kids do!
Do you really love technology? If you are someone who 100% uses technology, that is okay! Technology is our friend. We can build a healthy relationship and culture together!
Is Technology Good or Bad?
It is helpful!
Our kids are immersed in it.
We are invited to live our best life with it!
Questions to Ask About Technology:
Are you attached to your phone?
Are you able to put it down for hours at a time?
Do you use your phone as an escape from everyday life?
Screens and Teens by Kathy Koch is a book we are reading right now. It is an amazing book! She shared a story about how a little boy came up and hugged her after a conference because “he got his daddy back!” After she encouraged parents to get off their phones, the little boy got to play ball with his dad and just be together. It was a wake up call for the parents and the whole family to PUT DOWN THE SCREENS and be together.
Parents, we believe you are great parents! We want to inspire you to create healthy boundaries around technology. We believe you will see the fruit of relationships in your home!
Technology can be an escape or a work habit. Once you evaluate why you are looking at your screen, decide if the screen is a distraction from the relationships in your life. Have you ever thought about how your kids see technology use?
Kids & Technology
Our kids are citizens in the technology world, but if you are in a different generation (especially ours…) technology is a foreign world to us! As parents, we are invited to understand the “why” behind our kids love for technology.
What is it going to take to connect with our kids through technology? Our kids know we do not understand technology as much as they do! Sometimes we need their help. Asking and learning from them could be a way to connect and strengthen the relationship.
In this day and age, in order to get to know your kid you must get to know their technology.
In our parenting, we are pretty lenient in our parenting around technology. We chose to create filters instead of strict rules. We make mistakes along the way but our heart’s desire was to pursue relationship. We deeply want our kids to see us as a safe haven. We will share more about this in the episodes to come!
For this week, try and put down your phone and engage in the life happening right now!
