Merry Christmas Crazy Cool Families!

The last two weeks of the year we are going to share 2 main things:

  1. What do our kids need from us this Christmas
  2. What do our kids need from us during New Years

The state of our world as holidays approach is still tense. Families are not coming together, kids are masked up on Santa’s lap, and all the while our smiles are hidden or separated. The anxiety and sickness alone is something our kids are affected by; their little hearts sense all the chaos.

It’s been two years of unstable and aftermath of the COVID storm. It’s affected every part of our lives and if we aren’t careful we focus on all the bad effects of the last few years. The reality is we have children. We have little people growing up under our roof and it is our job to help them find hope, joy, and love in this season.

Christmas is a great time of the year to bring joy and hope into our families. Today, we are going to help you flip your thinking and reconnect to our kids and to the vision of Christmas.

The anxiety of the world vs. The Hope (the person) of Jesus.

Christmas is a great time to bring the hope of Jesus back into your home. In the midst of the Christmas crazy, what are you going to focus your family on Jesus. What a better time than when He was born; when the story began.

The birth of Jesus was a miracle. We can start with the miracles surrounding this time in history and all the ways Jesus fulfilled prophecies of the King to come. God’s authority and voice was all over this moment in history. It is the most incredible story next to the resurrection.

So how do we take what is happening in the world and keep in mind that our children want and need to be children?

  • We refocus them!
  • We turn their eyes to Jesus
Parents our duty to our children is to tell them of the miraculous works of God!

In other words, what our kids need from us this Christmas is to tell them (focus them) on the miracle of Christmas.

Psalm 78:2-4 says, “I will open my mouth with a parable;I will utter hidden things, things from of old things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us.We will not hide them from their descendants, we will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

Bottom Line: Parents, we are called to remind our kids and tell them of all God has done AND what He is doing now!

Things we do to keep Jesus the focus during Christmas

  • Cover your house with manger scenes
    • Have more baby Jesus than you do Santa’s or snowmen
  • Talk about the reason for the season
  • Read the Christmas story often (not just on Christmas Eve)
  • Talk about the miracles of Christmas night (attached a PDF if you need help)
  • Listen to worship music along with the Christmas carols
  • Go see a live Nativity scene or a play about the first Christmas night
  • Watch movies about Jesus being the reason for Christmas
  • Have a birthday party for Jesus (with cake and singing)
  • Go to Christmas Eve service
  • Write a letter to Jesus (not just to Santa)

Wrap Up

Christmas is miraculous and magical for kids. Do you remember your Christmas joys growing up? We get to replicate these joys for our kids and take them to the next level into the miracles of Christmas. We get to bring life, love, joy, and fun into the real reason for the Christmas season.

We think the magic is from the stockings, all the presents, the yummy treats to eat, playing with friends and family, no school (not routine) and from the world’s standpoint that is the only place the magic comes from. As believers, we know the real magic is from Christ our Savior being born.

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Parents, we get to live this truth. God is in control and He is worth celebrating this season. This is what our kids need from us. Our kids need to know the BEST gift ever given to us was that God so loved the world he gave us JESUS!

Check out this hand out about the miracles of Jesus. Share it with your kids this Christmas and choose to focus your family on the miracles of Jesus’s birth.
