Welcome to 2022! We are so excited to start the new year. Our daughter McKenzie got married in August of 2021 and jumps onto the podcast to share a few ways she “starts new things.” Her husband Parker also joins because (uh… why not? He’s a fun guy) and he loves “finishing things.” Together they make an amazing team
As they shared about family and the holidays, we see how seasons come and go. It takes energy and intentionality to walk through a season.
Have you ever thought why the new year starts in the dead of the winter?
Kenzie says she thinks it is cause we get to stop and reflect on all God has done and all he wants to do. How powerful! God starts something new in the deadest season. He is helping us grow all throughout the year.
Suz says God gives us seasons to remind us of how He is in control and is building a tapestry of our lives. He wants us to grow even during the “dead seasons.”
Do you ever feel like you don’t have enough energy to make it through a day? A week? A month?
You are not alone and there is a truth God gives us to combat the lack of life you may feel.
Psalm 104:27-30 says, “All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.”
God is renewing you. He is a good gardener and He makes the seasons. Often times we need to stop and look to Him (in every season) so as we go into a new year, we see His face. How are you allowing God to hold you, care for you, and carry you into 2022? Take a moment and think about this concept of God being your care-giver.
You can ask Him:
What do you want this season to look like?
What do I need to let go of and what do I need to hold onto?
What do you have for us in this moment?
How can I reset my heart and life in the new year?
Parker shared how failure is a pretty consistent track in his head. He gets excited about the new year because it means so many new possibilities but also fear because he remembers all the times he has come up short.
What if we talked about the new year as a mindset or habit of moving forward?
What if we took succeeding or failing out of the equation and just focused on what God is doing in you each day to inch you along, closer to Him.
“Take it one season at a time or one word at a time from the Lord.” – Parker
The goal is to hear God and agree with what He is saying. He is in charge of the seasons and He is inviting us to press in and just follow Him each day.
What if January was a month of repentance and changing our thinking. You could work with the Lord and allow Him to guide you and how quickly you change your old ways.
Suz got a picture of God meeting with us. We exchange all our goals for intimate time with Him. What if we dropped the goals and simply hung out with our loving Father who loves us.
New Season, New Things?
Kenzie recommended Sacred Pathwaysby Gary Thomas. It gives you a lot of ways to learn how you connect with God. If you feel unsure of how to spend time with God but know you want to, read this book!
Parker and Kenzie decided to unpack one letter of the New Testament each month of 2022. They chose Hebrews (cause Parker loves it) and plan to read it, listen to it, and watch commentary videos on it. They both know what book of the Bible to go to in January and will find space to talk about it.
The last thing we talk about is having a growth mindset and just choose to find life in what you do. God is our life source, so seek Him and life will flow.
Whatever you decide to do in this new year, invite God into it. We are only a few days into this year and there is still so much time to rethink the way you do new seasons!
