One Thing to Change in Your Relationships

How To Connect With Your Spouse During The Holidays

Welcome to 2021!

In this podcast, we ask one question:  What is the one thing you can do in 2021 to impact your family relationships in a positive way?

Remember at Crazy Cool Family we are all about relationships because relationships are the key to an amazing family!

Although 2020 was hard in more ways than we can count, we want to start the new year by focusing on the good.

STOP: Change Your Thinking!

Take a minute and change your view of 2020. Maybe you had…

  • More time at home
  • Slower schedule
  • Meals and endless nights together
  • Creative opportunities to make memories
  • Technology advancements (wanted, or not…)

2020 is a banner year in a lot of ways and one we will always remember. We get to choose how to file away 2020, and at CCF we are choosing to see it as a spring board into 2021!

So, let’s take all the hard moments, turn them into good and move into the new year with hope and passion for our families!

Here at CCF, we talk about 3 main things:

  1. Pursue God
  2. Build relationships
  3. Create culture

We believe relationships are the center of every family.

“So goes your relationships, so goes your family.”

On our website, we have a dashboard of relationships. Each line represents a relationship and the health of it.

STOP, GO, & DRAW!

Take a minute and click the link below to see a family dashboard example.

  • Next, draw your own family dashboard
  • Look over it and identify any relationships needing help, or extra attention

We have used this tool with countless family. It is an easy way to see all the relational lines in your family and the state of each one.

So, now that we clearly see all the lines in our family….

What’s the one thing you want to work on this year to improve your family relationships?

Examples from our lives include:

  • Don toning down the intensity, in his voice, when talking with the family
  • Suzanne intentionally pursuing the kids who come home from college, or the ones still living at home

We encourage all parents to take time today and ask God how to be fully present with your family in 2021.

Here are some more ideas on ways to change a relationship:

  • Tone of voice
  • Look in their eyes
  • Shift critical words to life giving words
  • See the good
  • Spending quality time
  • Giving gifts
  • Doing something special together
  • Write notes (journal)
  • Serving them
  • Hug, hold hand, touch more often

All of these ideas stem from the 5 love languages strategy and give practical way to express love to your family and others.

Here Comes the Challenge: Doing It!

We are invited to change our thinking and allow our brain to turn from old ways. Often, we get stopped by our shortcomings and failure, but we can overcome it with grace.

This is where the saying, “Practice makes perfect” comes in! Just keep doing it and the pathways in your brain will become highways, which ultimately creates an automatic response.

When you default back to your old ways (and you will) simply stop, apologize, and do it the new way. Eventually a habit will be formed.

As you are making changes, pray about it, talk to your spouse, and invite your kids in to help build the culture of your family!

Relationships are worth it! Jesus invites us to love the Lord with everything you’ve got and love your family the same way!

Matthew 22:37-39 says, “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (NIV)”

If you want 2021 to be the best year yet, take your eyes off the world, what’s happening in this crazy time, and put your eyes on what Jesus says is the most important thing, RELATIONSHIPS!
