You may ask, “Delight?! How can I delight in them when they can be so frustrating?!”
Delighting in your child is not a concept you hear very often, but it’s one of the greatest teachings we can share with you.
When you delight in your children, they will become delightful.
How do we know this? Because we know how God the Father delighted in His Son.
Look at Matthew 3:17. “Then suddenly the voice of the Father shouted from the sky, saying, ‘This is the Son I love, and my greatest delight is in him.'”
God declared His greatest delight was in Jesus. And He declared it with enthusiasm; He shouted it from the sky!
It’s common for parents to be critical of their children. Most conversations are centered around correction or commandments.
You may think it’s difficult to delight in them when they are not obeying you or are difficult to be around.
Remember, God the Father said this to Jesus before His ministry even started. God’s delight wasn’t because of what Jesus did; it was because of who He was!
Your delight in your children isn’t about their performance, it’s about who they are!
It’s not about what they do or don’t do, it’s about your own attitude towards them.
Delighting in your children means finding pleasure in them, looking forward to picking them up from school, being excited to spend the weekend with them, and enjoying their presence.
This isn’t going to happen all the time, but it needs to become a way of life in your own heart. Like anything, it takes time and repetition.
In this week’s podcast, we go into detail about what delighting in your children will do for them.
It fortifies them to handle trials and temptations.
It gives them the ammunition they need.
Notice what happened right after God declared His delight in Jesus. In Matthew 4, He was taken into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
God’s declaration over Jesus strengthened Him to face those temptations.
No matter how much you try to protect you kids, they are going to face trials and temptations. You can help give them the fortification and the ammunition they need to tackle the world and all its trials and temptations.
When children know their parents delight in them, it’s so much easier for them to believe that God delights in them. Isn’t that what we want them to know and believe?
Do your children believe you enjoy being with them?
If not, ask God to show you how you can delight in your children. God delights in them, as He delights in you!
Model what the Father did for His Son. Show your delight in your children and watch them become delightful.
