A new year brings an energy that comes with exciting new beginnings…and new resolutions.
As we head into this New Year (and new decade), we want to challenge you to choose one resolution to improve your family. Specifically, to improve the culture in your home.
What is ONE THING you can do to improve the culture in your home?
The culture, or the atmosphere, in your family drives relationships. If you don’t like the culture right now, you can change it! God has given you the power to do that.
In Section Three of our Crazy Cool Family book, we discuss culture in the home and focus on four main areas: Encouragement, Safety, Discipline, and Unity.
Examples of Encouragement: Tell your kids, “I’m so glad God put you in our family. I love getting to be with you.” “I love you.” “You’re so kind!”
Examples of Safety: Become a better listener. Listen more, lecture less. Seek to understand your child’s point of view.
Check out Podcast Episode 41 where we interview a Crazy Cool Family, Dave and Ally Schreiner. They had so many great things to share! They realized they were both doing too much for their kids. The One Thing they changed was to create more opportunities for their children to gain independence.
Several years ago, I (Don) decided I was going to become a more encouraging dad. It felt weird because it didn’t come naturally to me like it does others, but I did it anyway. I started encouraging my kids in more specific ways. It took work, but now it’s become easier to speak encouraging words. It took me changing my thinking.
Pick One Thing to change the culture in your home in 2020.
Pray about it. If you are married, talk about it with your spouse. Listen for God’s leading.
Allow yourself to fail from time to time. It’s going to happen, so give yourself grace.
Create a place of accountability:
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
