Our phones are such enemies of great parenting. Our devices are portals to somewhere else. That’s fine if we are by ourselves but not when we need to be present interacting with our spouse and kids.
My pastor once said this profound statement: We can only bring in God’s presence in our relationships when we are present in the relationship. Present. In other words, not distracted.
Here’s a simple challenge for you: For the next two days, put your phone in your pocket and don’t pull it out any time you are interacting with another family member. Maybe you put it on Airplane Mode whenever you walk into a room where you will be with your family. That may need to happen because it is so, so tempting to pull it out every time it buzzes in your pocket.
Just try it for two days. Be present with your spouse. Be present with your kids. Don’t go into the world where your device wants to take you. Or maybe where you want to go to avoid the relationships directly in front of you.
You will bring in your presence and God’s presence when you are present in your family relationships.
