So often when we are listening to a good sermon or read a Bible verse, we think, “I need to tell my spouse about that” or “my children really need that lesson.” Why is it our first thought is how someone else needs to change and not us? Ouch!
Be a disciple first and a spouse or parent second. Have you even seen our Crazy Cool Family House? Here it is:
What is highlighted at the top of the house? Pursue God. That is our most important relationship. Jesus tells us over and over in the Gospels our first commandment is not to tell others what to do, but to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
So when we hear that message that cuts to the heart, what if we looked at ourselves first? Then once we are changing, others in our family may see the changes and want to follow our lead. Remember, they will follow your godly example much more than your godly instruction.
Be a disciple first and a parent or spouse second and watch your family want to follow you more and even like you more.
