Helping Your Kids Thrive in School
Whether you have a perfectionist or a procrastinator, there are ways to help your kids thrive in school. Trust us, we’ve had our fair share of grade battles over the years!
Here are a few lessons we’ve learned along the way:
#1 - Teach Your Child to Own Their Grades
Your child needs to take responsibility for their success. If they don’t have the desire to do well, you’ll find yourself constantly nagging them. Help them understand that their education is for them, not just something they’re doing to please you.
#2 - Give Your Child a Vision for Why Grades Matter
Grades are more than just numbers on a page. They reflect work ethic, effort, persistence, and time management—all crucial life skills. Paint a picture for your kids of how hard work now can pay off later in life. When they see the "why," their motivation will grow.
#3 - Let Natural Consequences Play Out
Sometimes, kids need to experience failure to learn. Allowing them to get a zero on an assignment or feel the weight of missing a deadline can be powerful. It’s tough to let go, but trusting them to self-correct after a mistake is an important part of their growth.
#4 - Empower Instead of Nag
Instead of constantly reminding or pushing them, teach your kids how to manage their time and get things done. Show them the steps to success, then step back and let them take ownership. This approach helps build independence and confidence.
If this is something your family is working through, we’ve got a couple of podcasts that dive deeper into these strategies. Search “school” on our podcast page for more insights!
