Let Them Make Mistakes
Here’s a parenting paradigm shift: Mistakes are your friend!
Counterintuitive, right?
We want our kids to achieve excellence, make all their shots, ace every test.
But an avoidance of mistakes hampers progress.
I once asked a karate black belt friend to teach me some kicks.
My first attempts ended with me flat on my face!
But he didn’t laugh.
He knew failure was normal en route to success.
Only through mistakes did I improve.
Imperfection also builds relationship better than demanding flawlessness.
When kids try their best yet miss the mark, we get to encourage, “I believe in you! Mistakes mean you’re learning.”
Let them mess up, especially when young.
Create safe environments for attempts, wins and losses alike.
Then speak life when they fall short.
They’ll learn falling isn’t failing, but a stepping stone.
You’ll build resilient kids who, despite mistakes, confidently go for goals that matter.
Progress over perfection.
