What Role Do Grandparents Play in Your Family Culture?

You may have noticed that grandparents aren’t included in our CCF House... but in many family cultures, they are a pivotal part. We believe that your parents (or your spouse's parents) do play a role in your family dynamic.

So, what role are they meant to play? It may sound funny to ask it this way... but here’s the question:

What is the goal of a grandparent?

The goal of this relational dynamic is HONOR. Honor is the primary value we hold when it comes to having grandparents and being one! Here are a few ways you can show and request a culture of honor in your family:

1. Have a Conversation About Honor

Define what honor looks like by asking questions like:

• “What is honoring to you when our kids spend time with you?”
• “Here is how you can honor our family culture when the kids are with you... by doing... or not doing...”

This kind of open communication sets clear expectations and promotes mutual understanding.

2. Be Gracious

Grandparents usually want what is best for their family. Appeal to their hearts by communicating graciously. Ask them for advice, wisdom, and help in areas they can speak into. Share your heart with them and invite them into the process of building your family culture.

3. Honestly Say and Show Your Family’s Needs

Every family is different, and every family has its own boundaries and freedoms. Be bold and openly share with each grandparent what your family needs. Ask them to adhere to the boundaries and freedoms your family has established. Clearly communicate the role you want them to play within your family culture.

Build Mutual Honor Through Conversation and Action

Find ways to honor the grandparents in your life while having conversations that invite their honor in return. Family is worth it. You can create relationships that are meaningful by being intentional about setting boundaries, creating connection, and fostering mutual respect.

Do what it takes to strengthen these relationships while also being strategic with the freedoms you give!
