Serve Others Together by Sam Semans

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45 (NIV)

Jesus set the ultimate example of servanthood by giving His life for others, and as parents, we have the privilege of modeling this same spirit of service to our children. Involving them in serving others is one of the most tangible ways we can teach them about love, sacrifice, and humility.

One of the ways our family serves is through One Generation Away, a mobile pantry here in Middle Tennessee that provides fresh produce, dry goods, and more at drive-thru food distributions—no questions asked. We love this organization and look forward to serving alongside them.

Every time they host a local distribution, we wake up early on a Saturday, get the kids ready, and head out to help. We drive about 20 minutes to the site, where we spend several hours handing out groceries. It's hard work, but our kids genuinely enjoy it. They even ask when the next opportunity to serve is.

Why is this important? It’s not just about giving back; it’s about showing our children the value of serving their community, being the hands and feet of Jesus, and recognizing the needs in their own neighborhoods. It’s a beautiful lesson that service is an act of love, not something to check off a to-do list.

I know weekends can be precious family time and life often feels overwhelming, but what if we made serving others a regular part of our routine? What if we prioritized giving back as a family? It doesn't have to be a huge commitment to start—try once a quarter and build from there.

By involving our children in acts of service, we teach them that love isn’t just spoken but demonstrated through action. Let’s make serving others a non-negotiable in our homes.
