Discipling Our Kids in Everyday Moments
In Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV), Moses instructs the Israelites:
"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."
Moses reminds us of the importance of teaching God’s Word to our children in the context of everyday life. While family devotion time is a wonderful and intentional way to do this—setting aside time to study God’s Word together communicates its value—it’s not the only way.
What we prioritize in our homes teaches our children what matters most to us. Family devotionals are an opportunity to grow closer to God and each other, but discipleship can—and should—happen during the “in-between” moments too. It doesn’t always need to be a formal sit-down.

The opportunities are endless because discipleship fits seamlessly into the flow of daily life.
Jesus Is Portable
One thing I love to remind my community is that Jesus is portable. He’s with us wherever we go; it’s up to us to decide whether we make Him visible.
For example, many moms begin their day with personal devotions (which is fantastic!), but as soon as the kids wake up, they may feel the need to tuck away their Bible or journal. Instead, I encourage you to invite your kids into that time. Have them grab their own Bibles or journals and join you. This simple act models that faith is part of your family’s rhythm, not just an individual practice.
Authenticity Over Perfection
In today’s world, social media often creates pressure to make devotional time picture-perfect. But God—and your kids—care far more about your heart posture than how “pretty” your time looks. Real faith isn’t about perfection; it’s about authenticity and consistency.
Simple Ways to Incorporate Faith
Here are a few practical and powerful ways to disciple your children in everyday moments:
The most important thing to remember is that discipleship doesn’t have to be formal or structured. It often happens naturally, in the small moments of the day.
So, how do you disciple your kids throughout the day? What are some of the “in-between” moments where you can invite Jesus into your family life?
