Embrace the Unconventional: Being Different in Discipleship
Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow is the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
Normal is the wide gate that leads to destruction. Different is the road that leads to life.
You may think I am talking about the world, but I’m not. I’m talking about normal Christian families. Statistics show 60-70% of kids leaving Christian homes won’t follow their faith when they leave home. They won’t get involved in a church. They won’t actively pursue their faith. That’s normal.
If that’s normal, what do we do so our kids and our families will be different? Simple. Not easy but simple and the most profound lesson I learned in parenting. We simply make what is important to Jesus important to our family.
Matthew 22: 36-39. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
For Jesus, the most important thing was love. It was relationship. It was not obedience or performance or the way we look or who likes us or any of that. It was to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. When we love God, we receive His love and we know we are loved.
Then we can love our neighbor – our most important neighbor is in our home – as we love ourselves and we can show our kids how to love God, receive that love, and love others.
Be different. Be different in pursuing relationship instead of performance. Connect with your kids instead of getting on to them all the time. Listen to them more and lecture less.
Be different by learning to love God with all your heart and then loving your kids from that heart.
