Embracing Childhood Fears

Listen to Audio

OK, here’s a weird question: Do you blame God for cockroaches in your dreams? We talked to one dad whose three-year-old did not want to pray one night. Instead of lecturing the kid about why they should pray and making the kid feel bad, the dad just asked, “Why?” and the child told him about his dream of getting attacked by cockroaches and how he thought God was responsible.

Silly thinking? An ungodly belief? Absolutely but in the kid’s mind it was gospel. But the dad handled it so well. He encouraged the boy by telling him how God was good and how the enemy brings attacking thoughts in our head, not God and how God wants to give us the power to fight the negative thoughts. Then they spent some time figuring out ways to fight the cockroaches in his dreams if they came back again.

The boy left the conversation feeling like a mighty warrior and trusting that God was for him, not against him, and feeling strong instead of guilty that he blamed God for his dreams.

When your kids have ungodly beliefs, find out why by asking questions and avoiding initial criticism and blame. Your child will become more confident so he or she can fight the cockroaches of life!
