How to Measure Success in Parenting

Listen to Audio

How do you measure success in parenting? By your kids’ grades? By their sports performance? By whether they did or did not embarrass you in public today?

You want to know what God’s measure of your parenting is? Guess what? It’s not about results.

It’s about your obedience to God and your trust in God. Today did you trust in God and do things His way in spite of the circumstances?

In Mark4:26-29 Jesus says, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain — first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”

God is really good at not telling us when or how the harvest is going to come. Just ask Abraham as he waited on the promise of Isaac.  Just ask David as he waited years to be king.

Or sometimes he tells us but we don’t hear very well. Just ask Jesus’ disciples.

We don’t know when the harvest will come. We don’t know when that kid will finally have a faith breakthrough. We don’t know when our daughter will stop being so anxious or when our three-year-old will stop embarrassing us with his fit every time at the grocery store.

So we focus on the obedience and trust and let God take care of the harvest.
