How do we keep ourselves from losing it with our kids? How do we have wisdom to share with them at the right times? In other words, how can we be ready to respond best in all parenting situations (not to mention marriage situations too)?
Here’s what Jesus said to do.
As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.
NIV 49-46:6 Luke
We never really know when the floods of life are going to come. When that child will throw a fit. When they will make that bad grade. When they will be hurt by someone.
But Jesus tells us to be ready by building our house on Him. We get ready to handle the floods on the outside by preparing our hearts on the inside. If we don’t, when the flood hits, “it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
How do we build our foundation? By reading God’s Word. By going to church and letting our pastor teach us and by getting in a small group to learn from others. By listening to podcasts or reading books that teach us about life and family. By simply spending time with God in prayer and worship.
At Crazy Cool Family, we say it like this: The best thing you can do for your family is to present them the healthiest version of you. What are you doing today to build your house on the foundation of Jesus? As your house gets built well on a firm foundation, you will be able to weather the floods of family life with wisdom and grace.
