The Interrupt Rule

Listen to Audio

Do you get tired of your children repeatedly asking for your attention when you are talking to someone?

“Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom”

Here’s a quick tip that you can easily train all your children to do that will stop those “Mom” words for good. We learned it from a parenting curriculum called Growing Kids God’s Way years ago, and it worked great for us.

Here’s what you train your kids to do:  When they want something, they come up to you and place their hand on your side. They don’t say anything. They simply place their hand on your side.

Then you acknowledge you know they are there by putting your hand over theirs. This tells them you know they are there, and you will give them your attention shortly.

Once you get to a break in the conversation, you look down to them and ask them what they need.

Our kids were able to learn this pretty quickly, and it was such a benefit in conversations when adults and kids interact like a ballgame or at church.

If they come up to you and say your name repeatedly, simply tell them to go across the room or the ball field and try again. Over time they will learn you are serious about this method.

And no more, “Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom” Try it!
