If God is Good, Why Do Bad Things Happen?

Listen to Audio

Do you ever get this question from your kids: If God is good, why do bad things happen?

Do you wonder about that yourself? How do we answer this for our children?

I believe we underestimate the impact of the choices of all the people in this world and the devasting impact of sin in our world.

Think about this: What if everyone followed God’s ways?

What if everyone was kind and compassionate, forgiving each other as Christ forgives us? (Ephesians 4:32)

What if everyone did “nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit” but instead “in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but to the interest of others?” Philippians 2:3-4

What if everyone followed the Ten Commandments? No lying, stealing, envy, idols, etc.

What if everyone “put to death….sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed?
(Colossians 2:5)

What would our world look like then?

God is good. God is love. Just because He does not always take away the impact of the choices of people and the effects of sin does not take away from His goodness or His love.

Now we know that bad things sometimes happen to good people, but that is not because God is not good. It is because of the overall devasting effects of sin in our world.

Maybe the reason we underestimate the goodness of God is not because of His lack of goodness, but because we underestimate the effects of sin in our world.
