A question we get all the time from parents is: "How do I teach my children to give?"
It’s a great question and one that every parent should be asking. Let’s look at 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 for guidance:
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
So, how do we teach our kids generosity?
The answer may feel challenging but also simple—the best way to teach our children to be generous is for us to be generous ourselves. Generosity often centers on two areas: time and money.
1. Start with tithing.
Are you giving consistently to your local church? Tithing isn’t just about the church’s needs; it’s about building a generous spirit in us (and eventually, in our kids). Let your kids in on the purpose of tithing, explaining that God provides for us, and we give back to Him as a joyful act of love and trust.
2. Give beyond the tithe.
Beyond tithing, look for ways to help those in need. Some ideas:
As we invite God to nurture generosity in our own lives and let our kids see that, generosity will become second nature to them as well.
Ultimately, your life is your message. If you model generosity and allow your kids to be part of giving decisions, they’ll understand generosity as a powerful way to share God’s love.
