George McDonald said that God "watches to see the door move from within."
George is talking about God watching us, but there is a parallel there for parents. We are always watching our kids to "see the door move from within" their hearts.
But often, we have to watch closely, or we will miss it. The door is only open just a crack. Our kids open up just a little to see how they will be received. Does it produce a lecture? Do they make you scared? Are they going to get in trouble?
However, when we are watching and we gently draw them out — think of a scared puppy inching up to see if you can be trusted — that is when we start to build relationships. Connections begin with trust.
How do we see them crack the door?
- Maybe they tell you something that happened at school.
- Maybe they tell you about a bad grade on a test.
- Maybe they share an opinion with you.
What are you going to do when you see the door move from within? How you respond will influence where your relationship goes with that kid.
