An Art and a Skill

An Art and a Skill

Read as Don shares insight in today’s tip.

I was watching the Masters golf tournament recently. As a golfer who was happy shooting anywhere in the high 80’s, I can only imagine what it must be like to hit a driver over 300 yards right down the fairway, then chip the ball on the green and make a 30-foot putt look so easy for birdie.

An Art and a Skill

I also can’t imagine the effort it takes to be that kind of golfer. The hours and hours of practice. The coaching they receive on every aspect of their game. Their constant quest to be the best. From their coaches to their personal trainers to their caddies, they are constantly getting advice on how to be their best.

Here’s a question…

What kind of parent do you want to be?

Do you want to hit the ball all over the course and score in the 90’s or 100’s or do you want to be a “scratch” parent? (In case you don’t know what a scratch golfer is, it’s a golfer who consistently is able to shoot par on a golf course).

Over three decades of parenting, Suzanne and I have learned parenting is both an art and a skill. Like golf, most of us don’t naturally do it well and most of us are not confident in how we do it. And like golf, becoming really proficient at the art and skill of parenting takes time. We don’t lower our score from 100 to 70 in a weekend golf tournament, and it won’t happen with parenting either.

But here’s the good news: We have taught thousands of parents over the last two decades and we have found that parenting is an art and a skill that EVERY PARENT can learn to do well! God created and entrusted us with the skills we need to be able to raise children with grace, inspiration, and effectiveness.
