Parenting is Really About Identity

Listen to Audio

On a recent podcast, our daughter Macy shared how motherhood has rocked her identity.

It got us thinking: Do parents realize that parenting is all about identity?

Here’s what we mean...

Before you became a parent, you were first and foremost a child of God, right?

But after becoming a parent, you were given a new identity. It may take your child 12-18 months to call you “momma” or “dada,” but in God’s eyes, you are already seen as a mother or father. You are HIS REFLECTION of a parent’s love—the same love He gives to all of His children. By stepping into parenthood, you’ve stepped into a deeper understanding of God’s heart than ever before.

Macy shared how this realization rocked her. As she held her baby girl and felt the love pouring out of her (tears and all, lol), she understood her identity as a mom coming alive. In that moment, she realized a tiny fraction of how God feels about her and sees her. She felt the weight, the beauty, and the honor of getting to be a parent. She understood the lifelong adventure of walking this journey with Father God. Her identity was shaken, renewed, and ready to be understood.

Parents, here’s the truth: Our identity determines our behavior.

When we truly believe we are loved, we pour out love to others. When we believe we are chosen, set apart, wanted, and seen—we overflow those truths to everyone around us. That’s why understanding our identity is vital: it empowers us to walk it out every single day.

Today, we invite you to stop and ask God for your identity.

Simply ask Him this question:

“God, who do you say I am? How do you see me?”

Take time to seek Him for the answer. Be still. Wait for His still, small whisper. Write it down or type it in your phone. Allow His voice to shape your identity as a parent—and allow His love to flow through you.

When you receive your identity from God, it will ONLY BENEFIT YOUR FAMILY.
